Tar Lab is the new name and identity of the La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles, the only constant urban excavation site in the world. An adaptable 2 part identity mark emphasizes the paleontology laboratory (skeletal reconstruction, cataloging, and research) as much as the focus on excavation. The two identity marks work together to illustrate the cyclic process from the pits (black) to the lab (white).
The spatial installation is a 5x5 feet structure imagined to live in the entrance lobby of the museum. Both logo states inhabit the space of the “pit” where they illustrate the 4 part process of Tar Lab: excavation, reconstruction, catalogue, and research.
